Fiorentina patron Diego Della Valle believes his club has to be in Europe and can't regress into being a mid-table team.
Sunday's draw at home to Roma meant Fiorentina slipped to ninth place in Serie A and although they are unbeaten in five games there is a sense that qualifying for the Europa League might be a step too far with so little of the season remaining.
Fiorentina have stood by Sinisa Mihajlovic, insisting that he is their choice for the long-term, but Della Valle's latest comments will do little to kill speculation.
"Fiorentina's dimension is not that of today, it's a European dimension," Della Valle said.
Reflecting on other aspects of the club, he added: "If Adrian Mutu continues in this fashion, he is on the right track. Pantaleo Corvino and Mihajlovic are working on confirming that Alberto Gilardino will be here again next season.
"I am only a fan," he concluded.
