Vincenzo Montella admits Fiorentina got too complacent, but trying to be spectacular “is our strength and can be our weakness.”
The Viola were in complete control, but after conceding a Manolo Gabbiadini counter-attack only squeezed past Sampdoria 2-1.
“We dominated this game with passing, pace and movement for 70 minutes. We were afraid of this match, as it came at the end of a packed fixture list,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“At times you get the feeling this team wants to be spectacular above all else. That is our strength and at times can become our weakness. We can’t take the joy of football away from the lads.
“Then we conceded on that counter-attack and got a bit of a scare. We risked conceding the 2-2, which wouldn’t be the first time we’ve done that at home, but we got away with it this time.
“I don’t know why this keeps happening. Perhaps tonight we felt a little too in control and relaxed, which is an error we must not make.
“You need to be complete in order to win. This side needs to have fun with its football and trying to clip their wings would take away some of that creativity, so I don’t want to tell them off too much.”
