Juventus have the joy of six, Napoli end an Olimpico taboo, Florence goalfest and Antonio Cassano's century as Susy Campanale rounds up the Serie A stats.
Juventus kept six consecutive Serie A clean sheets for the first time since April-September 2002, though that was spread out across two seasons. Gigi Buffon is unbeaten in 550 minutes of League football, closing in on his personal best of 568 minutes set in 2011-12. If we include cross-season runs, then Buffon didn’t conceded for 761 minutes between the 2001-02 and 2002-03 campaigns.
The Bianconeri have won 14 of their last 16 League games in Turin, drawing the other two, and scored in each of the last 27 rounds for a total 50 goals. Juve are now the only side to have scored in every Serie A game this season. Fernando Llorente found the net for the third game in a row.
Udinese have lost their last three trips to Turin, six of their last seven away games overall and failed to score in 214 minutes of football outside their home turf. The Friulani surprisingly have the third weakest attack in the Division with 12 goals, as only Chievo on 11 and Catania with 10 have fewer.
Antonio Cassano celebrated his official 100th Serie A goal, the sixth of the current campaign and fifth in the last eight matches. He scored on his first top flight start, Bari’s 2-1 victory over Inter on December 18 1999. FantAntonio’s career tally is six Serie A goals for Bari, 39 Roma, 35 Sampdoria, seven Milan, seven Inter and six for Parma. In that time he has netted against 49 different goalkeepers.
Roma had not drawn four top flight matches on the bounce since May 2000, but extended their unbeaten run to 16. With only four goals conceded in the opening 14 rounds, Rudi Garcia’s men equal the all-time Serie A record set by Inter in 1988-89 and Roma in 2003-04. They also match their own club record of going unbeaten up to Week 14, something they already achieved in 2003-04. Only the Lupi, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are still unbeaten domestically on the continent this season, as Barcelona lost to Athletic Bilbao.
The Giallorossi had not shared the points in Bergamo since another 1-1 in 2001, earning four wins each. Davide Brivio got his fourth Serie A goal and with two this season matches his personal best set with Lecce in 2011-12. Kevin Strootman went up to three Serie A strikes. Luca Cigarini had his 100th appearance in an Atalanta jersey.
Napoli earned their first Serie A victory away to Lazio since a 1-0 in October 2008, followed by two points from four visits. They achieved it with Gonzalo Higuain, whose last League goals from open play were against Milan on September 22. Higuain is unbeaten in the last 17 League ties where he was on the scoresheet. The Partenopei had only ever netted four Serie A goals in Rome (against both Capital clubs) twice before with a 4-0 in 1953 and 4-4 in 2007. They hadn’t even managed three away to Lazio since May 1993. Goran Pandev scored the 70th goal on his 300th Serie A appearance, while Jose Maria Callejon went up to seven.
The Aquile are without a win in five rounds, including two defeats, and have won just one of their last nine. The last team to score four past Lazio on their own turf was Cagliari on January 25 2009. Keita Balde scored his second Serie A goal at the seventh appearance.
Fiorentina-Verona was the second most prolific Monday game in Serie A history, beaten only by Roma 4-5 Inter on May 3 1999. They are unbeaten in their last 13 top flight Monday fixtures, last losing 3-1 to Milan in 1950. No other Serie A match in this century had seen four goals in the opening 15 minutes. It still wasn’t the top-scoring first half of the season, though, as Parma 4-3 Atalanta had six goals by the break on September 25.
The Viola have converted a penalty in each of their last four home fixtures and with six overall have the record for this season. Borja Valero’s only other career League brace was for Mallorca against Recreativo Huelva in March 2008. Juan Manuel Vargas took his Serie A career tally to 20 goals. Giuseppe Rossi has 12 goals in the first 14 rounds and the last Fiorentina man to have such a strong start was Luca Toni on 16 in 2005-06.
Hellas Verona suffered their 300th Serie A defeat from 766 played, but hadn’t lost three on the bounce since May 2002. Romulo set a new personal best with his third goal of the season, five in Serie A overall, while Juan Iturbe went up to three and Jorginho six. Alessandro Agostini marked his 300th Serie A appearance.
Catania have not beaten Milan, home or away in Serie A and B, since a 1-0 home result in 1963, managing just 14 stalemates and 15 losses. The Elefantini have only one victory in the last eight rounds, along with two draws. The Rossoneri finally ended their negative streak of three points from five League games and for the first time since September managed to win two matches in a row in all competition. It was also their first away victory of the campaign after three draws and as many losses.
Riccardo Montolivo marked his 25th Serie A strike, the first since Fiorentina 2-2 Milan on April 7, while Mario Balotelli hadn’t found the net in four rounds after Milan 1-2 Napoli on September 22. Kaka has scored in each of his last three competitive appearances and this was his 73rd Serie A goal, the 99th in all competition for Milan. Ricky enjoys facing Catania, as he has put six goals past them in six encounters.
Sampdoria have not conquered Inter at San Siro since a 4-3 success in 1996, scraping only five draws from 12 visits. Fredy Guarin celebrated his sixth Serie A goal, the second against the Blucerchiati, but it was Renan’s debut strike at the seventh appearance.
Parma have drawn their last two home games by 1-1 scorelines. The Ducali extended their unbeaten run to three rounds, picking up seven points, while Bologna are without a victory since October 30. The Rossoblu managed just one win (2-0 in May 2013), two draws and two defeats in their last five visits to the Stadio Tardini. Panagiotis Kone marked his 12th Serie A goal, the second in as many rounds.
Torino haven’t won away to Genoa since a 1-0 result in 1981, followed by eight draws and nine losses between Serie A and B. Gian Piero Gasperini’s record on the Genoa bench is now four wins, three draws and one single defeat to Juventus. This was Gasp’s 300th match as a Coach between Serie A, B and C.
Omar El Kaddouri had never scored a Serie A goal before last week, but now has three in two games. Davide Biondini’s eighth career top flight strike was his first since October 2011, Cagliari’s 2-0 win at Lecce. The Granata have scraped three draws from five away matches since their 2-1 win in Bologna on September 22. Toro fumbled 12 points from leading positions, more than any other club in the League alongside Milan. Giampiero Ventura’s men extended their run of no clean sheets to 13 Serie A rounds.
Cagliari are unbeaten in three rounds, but have scored seven goals in the final 18 minutes – more than any other club in this period. Nene had not found the net in Serie A for over a year, since his brace in a 4-2 win over Siena on October 31 2012, while Marco Sau went up to 14 in his career and Simone Zaza five. Lino Marzorati’s last top flight goal was on December 23 2007, Udinese 2-2 Empoli. Sassuolo have amassed eight points in the last four rounds and Domenico Berardi played a part in seven of their last nine goals (scoring five and providing two assists).
Chievo hadn’t won two on the bounce since March, when Eugenio Corini was also in charge. This was their first Serie A game won by three clear goals since another 3-0 away to Brescia on January 30 2011. The Flying Donkeys extended their clean sheet to 383 minutes of football. Livorno have never beaten Chievo, home or away in all competition, with just one point from 10 meetings. The Amaranto have one point from their last six travels, are without a goal in 349 minutes overall and 405 minutes away from home.
Luca Rigoni has put two of his career total eight Serie A goals past Livorno, who are with Fiorentina his favourite victims. Cyril Thereau went up to 21 Serie A career strikes and Alberto Paloschi ended a month-long drought for his 23rd.
