Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis praised his side for amassing 12 points despite their Champions League exit.
The Partenopei beat Arsenal 2-0 this evening, finishing joint top of their group with Borussia Dortmund and the Gunners, but went out by one goal in the head-to-head records.
“The 12 points say a lot. I am happy that we won the game playing well and this is a sign Rafa Benitez is working well with a lot of potential in this squad. With some new targeted signings we can really do something,” De Laurentiis told Sky Sport Italia.
“Now we have to shake off this provincial attitude of treating each victory or defeat as the be-all and end-all, because we are on a long-term project and I am convinced with these people at the club we’ll get there.”
The Hollywood movie mogul had been very critical of the Europa League last season and explained his position.
“Going directly into the Europa League at the end of a season becomes a terrible waste of money and effort.
“If you are in the Champions League and go into the Europa League, you add more games to your season and at the end if you are lucky can combine the two competitions to put together decent revenue.”
