Alberto Malesani felt Sassuolo played “overall a pretty even game” in their slender 1-0 defeat to Inter .
“If we consider what happened last time, the team has made huge steps forward!” he joked referring to the 7-0 hammering in October.
“I liked the performance, it was an improvement on last week, though our only real mistake was from a set play on Walter Samuel’s goal.
“We allowed some chances, but you have to run risks when trying to equalise. Overall I’d say it was a pretty even game.
“I think we played decent football today, much better than against Verona, and I saw the right attitude. I believe this is basically the right set-up and we will carry on along this path.
“In these games you ask the strikers to track back and help out in defence, then it’s up to them to find the right spaces.
“I wanted Sergio Floccari and Domenico Berardi to attack the wide members of the three-man defence. Berardi did it better because he is fitter right now, as Floccari barely played at Lazio last season.”
It is also true to say the Nerazzurri had several opportunities to extend their lead with Diego Milito, Hernanes and Rodrigo Palacio.
“I know Palacio very well and he used his pace against our defence, which unfortunately isn’t very quick. If you look at Inter’s chances, most of them were counter-attacks because we were pushing forward.
“We had our chances too in this game, especially in the first half forcing Samir Handanovic into a great save on Berardi.”
Sassuolo are joint second-from-bottom with Livorno, having won only one of their last nine.
“Confidence comes from performances. We weren’t embarrassing against Inter, so now we need to make that extra step up to get a victory and from there it’ll be easier. We brought in more experience in January, which is crucial when battling against relegation. I am confident.”
