Vincent Candela is dismayed that Roma have allowed Philippe Mexes to leave on a Bosman with his next destination likely to be Milan.
Mexes revealed on Wednesday that he is leaving Roma after "seven beautiful years" once his contract expires at the end of this season.
Speaking to Radio Power Station, Candela said: "Such an important player's contract should not be allowed to run down.
"Roma needed to renew his contract."
Asked for his opinion of Roma's season, Candela said: "This year the players have done what they wanted. Everyone has gone down their own path and no one has got them back on track.
"It couldn't have been otherwise with the club in transition. Vincenzo Montella is doing well. He could establish himself at the highest level if he stays.
"It's just a shame about the Champions League. The chances of qualifying are minimal."
