Raul Albiol said Napoli “believed and deserved” to reach the Europa League quarter-finals after an exit to Porto.
The Partenopei dominated the second leg, but were unable to fully turn around the 1-0 defeat in Portugal, as a 2-2 draw at the San Paolo eliminated them.
“It’s a shame, as we believed and deserved to go through to the next phase,” said the defender.
“For 70 minutes Napoli were the only team on the pitch, but we didn’t finish off our chances or kill off the game.
“Porto scored with their first opportunity. Football can be like that. The fans applauded us and I thank them, as it’s a sign they appreciated our efforts.
“Now we must concentrate on Serie A, as we want to catch Roma in second place.
“There is also the Coppa Italia Final against Fiorentina in May, so we have a lot left to play for this season.”
Second place would give Napoli automatic qualification for the Champions League group phase next term, whereas third provides access only to the play-off round.
