Roberto Donadoni has reflected on his objectives, his respect for Juventus and his regret at how chances with Italy and Napoli ended too soon.
The 50-year-old is back in the spotlight this season after some impressive work with Parma, which sees them head into a midweek meeting with Juventus on a club record unbeaten run of 17 League games.
For the tactician though, attention tomorrow should be on Antonio Conte’s side, for their imperious lead at the top of the table.
“You have to have respect for their winning run and recognise their merit,” Donadoni has commented to Il Giornale today.
“Juve is a great battleship, they remind of Fabio Capello’s Milan, a winner of four Scudetti in five years. Even in more difficult games, they have the decisive blow.
“My objectives? I do not know. Why’s that? Because the players at Parma have surprised me. They told me: ‘Mister, we are convinced of our quality’.
“To see Parolo, Paletta and Cassano at the World Cup for me would be almost like a Scudetto.”
Donadoni reflected also on his past experiences on the bench, namely the negative ones with the Italian national team and with Napoli, which both, according to him, ended prematurely.
“With the national team I feel I did well. I do not deny it, I would like to have continued after the European Championships, but I respect the choice made by the FIGC.
“The same applies to Napoli - I sometimes think about what might have happened if I had been able to complete my work in that city.”
The former Milan player considered who the influences on his managerial style include.
“I have been fortunate. Everyone thinks that I have learned only from Sacchi and Capello. I would add, if permitted, Parreira and Liedholm.
“From Arrigo I have taken his maniacal nature. I am mildly manic. From Capello I have taken flexibility - he was able to fight so hard and the next day it was all erased, forgotten.
“This lesson has helped me a lot because every day you grapple with players who are champions in individualism.”
