Walter Mazzarri felt Inter “fully deserved a victory” against Udinese and explained why he bit a water bottle.
The Coach vented his frustration on the bench during the 0-0 draw , at one point biting a water bottle and lifting it up between his teeth. He was shown the footage before his interview on Sky Sport Italia and laughed.
“You’re not a Coach, you don’t understand! These cameras on the bench are ruthless... All season we have had moments like this, so eventually we might have one shot on goal and score.”
The Nerazzurri have scored just 10 goals in 2014, fewer than any other club apart from relegation strugglers Bologna.
“But how many chances did we create? How many opportunities hit the woodwork, were saved or went close? This is just one of those seasons, unless the wind changes in the next few rounds.
“I didn’t like the first half, let me be honest. Udinese are a strong side who pressed us all over the field and closed down all the spaces.
“In the second half we deserved to score at least two or three goals, especially in the last half-hour. We tired Udinese out, dominated and then simply didn’t score.
“At times there are errors in finishing, but at others there are elements we cannot control, such as the woodwork or the opposition goalkeeper. When we start playing the way we can, we create an incredible number of chances.”
The first half was a chess match, but Mazzarri explained how he shook things up to dominate the last half-hour.
“Tonight was a 3-5-2 against a 3-5-2, man for man, so if you don’t dribble past one man you have stasis. Udinese locked everything down and wouldn’t let us breathe.
“With the tactical change I made to stop them marking us man for man, we started created a series of chances. At that point you have to put it in the net – there’s no other option!
“In the second half I took Hernanes deeper, but wanted two against one on Udinese’s left flank, using Jonathan and Ricky Alvarez. They hadn’t predicted that and struggled.
“In the first half the players seemed a little flat. Hernanes had someone constantly glued to his side and it’s not easy to play in those conditions, but with time and some tactical adjustments it went better.
“The important thing was to win and the team did everything possible to win. In my view they fully deserved a victory.”
