David Trezeguet “would like to join Napoli and is trying to leave Hercules,” declared the ex-Juventus star's agent.
Over the past six months, Trezeguet has repeatedly been linked with a move to the Stadio San Paolo.
“I am going out to Alicante now to convince the President to release him,” agent Antonio Caliendo told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“There is no reason for him to stay at Hercules any more. I have already said he'd like to return to Italy and play for a club in the south.
“There is a great chance that, if there is a choice, he will pick with his heart rather than out of economic interest.”
Trez left Juventus last summer after breaking records as their top all-time foreign goalscorer, but wants a return to Serie A.
“He'd be very happy to play at the San Paolo and it's something David has considered carefully.
“Lately he has talked about this a lot and I told him all about the passion of the fans. The love that the Partenopei supporters have is fantastic and you cannot understand it unless you play with the Napoli jersey.
“Their fans are unique and you won't find another crowd like it in the world.”
Trezeguet would replace Cristiano Lucarelli, who has already stated he will leave Napoli at the end of the season.
The club is on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League and relies very heavily on current hitman Edinson Cavani.
