Roma boss Vincenzo Montella has refused to defend Daniele De Rossi after a three-match ban. “His behaviour was unjustifiable.”
The midfielder was sent off during last week's 3-2 win at Bari after lashing out with an elbow on Simone Bentivoglio and will therefore miss the rest of the Serie A season.
“I spoke to Daniele straight after the game and he told me he was just trying to defend himself in the challenge,” explained Coach and former teammate Montella.
“Looking at the footage, I got a very different sense of the situation. Daniele's behaviour was unjustifiable, so both the red card and three-match ban are to be expected.
“As a Coach, I cannot accept that behaviour from one of my players.”
De Rossi's suspension begins this evening in the showdown with Serie A leaders Milan.
Simone Perrotta also saw red in the Bari game and sits out a three-match ban, joining the injured Philippe Mexes in the stands.
Matteo Brighi and Fabio Simplicio are expected to step in to the Roma midfield as replacements.
