Lecce President Pierandrea Semeraro says he is “disappointed, but understands” why Coach Gigi De Canio quit the club.
De Canio had taken the Salentini to an unexpected new season in Serie A with a week to spare, but announced he will be leaving after the final game against Lazio on Sunday.
“I find the clamour that has followed this decision to be excessive,” wrote President Semeraro on the official Lecce website.
“These things happen in football, as players and managers do it at all levels. Last Wednesday the Coach had told me personally of his decision, then the story leaked out and we had to ratify it quicker than expected.
“While obviously we are disappointed by this decision and the difficulty of finding a new Coach, I tell the fans that I also understand his choice,” continued Semeraro.
“We cannot help but thank De Canio who, together with the club and the entire city, achieved very important results.
“On Monday we will have a meeting to discuss the future and making this club financially independent.”
Meanwhile, Lecce player Ruben Olivera will be out of action for several months after undergoing surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
