Italy scraped through to the Toulon Tournament semi-final after a 1-1 draw with Colombia, though they went down to 10 men and were denied a penalty.
The Azzurrini needed a victory to be sure of reaching the semi-final, but a draw proved to be enough because they had a superior goal-scoring record than Portugal.
They got off to a very bad start when Quinones unleashed a strange swerving shot that beat Sergio Viotti at the near top corner.
Mattia Destro was furious on 24 minutes when he was brought down by Franco in the box. Rather than a penalty, the Inter-owned striker was shown an inexplicable yellow card.
The Mexican referee caused even more controversy with an extraordinary straight red card to Roberto Soriano for what looked like a normal midfield challenge on Marino.
Nonetheless, 10-man Italy had the chance to equalise when Fabio Borini pounced on a defensive error to test the goalkeeper at the near post.
Straight after the restart, Borini had another great chance cleared off the line as Alberto Paloschi was ready to tap in from a yard.
The referee continued to be confusing, as he awarded a very penalty to Italy for a push on Paloschi. The Milan-owned striker successfully converted to equalise.
Bizarrely, the official then blew the final whistle one minute into the four awarded of stoppages, so it ended 1-1.
The point was enough to qualify, as in the other game Portugal beat the Ivory Coast 1-0, so Italy and Colombia go through with superior scoring records.
