Milan signing Philippe Mexes thanks Roma for “seven marvellous years” and reveals why he turned down Real Madrid and Manchester United.
The defender was a free agent after his contract with the Giallorossi expired and held his first Press conference with his new side today.
“I keep all the Roma teammates in my heart, as I'll never forget the city and its fans, who did so much for me. Now I am at Milan and very proud to be part of this club,” he said.
“I had seven marvellous years at Roma and it's partly thanks to them that I grew as a man and a player to earn this opportunity with Milan.
“It was my choice, as I could've joined Real Madrid this summer. In the past I chose Roma ahead of Manchester United. I dreamed of a club like this since childhood and it's an important shop window, so I can hope to earn a place in the France squad for Euro 2012.”
Mexes could well find himself on the bench at San Siro, with competition from Alessandro Nesta, Thiago Silva and Mario Yepes.
“I am humble and respect everyone. Clearly there is competition, but I'll do my utmost to help the team and give my contribution.
“Even if there are no more signings this summer, Milan are already favourites for the Scudetto and competitive in the Champions League.
“Everyone has been very welcoming and I'm won over by the humility of great champions. I am just annoyed that I can't get to know them better on the field, but I'm working like a madman to recover quickly from the knee injury.”
