Sokratis Papastathopoulos has left Genoa after accepting a loan move to German giants Werder Bremen.
The 23-year-old only returned to Marassi this summer after spending last season with Italian champions Milan.
The Bundesliga outfit have netted the player on a temporary basis for the 2011-12 campaign, with the option to buy outright next summer.
"After initial discussions with the club, it was immediately clear to me that I would accept the offer from Werder," the player noted.
Werder director Klaus Allofs said: "He's a young player who has already gained some experience at Genoa and in the Greek national team.
"With his speed, his strength and tackling game, he will certainly be of help to us. "
