Milan have reportedly made the first step in asking Fiorentina for Riccardo Montolivo, offering €5.5m and half of Alberto Paloschi.
The midfielder is out of contract next summer and has repeatedly turned down a contract extension, so he has been stripped of the captaincy.
It's widely believed he is the Mister X that Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani hinted at, as he'd fill that left midfield role that is currently empty.
According to today's reports, the Rossoneri have sent a proposal to Fiorentina for €5.5m plus co-ownership of Italy Under-21 international striker Paloschi.
That would take the total value to €8m, but the Viola turned down this offer, as they have set the price-tag at €10m.
Meanwhile, newspapers are still trying to guess who Mister X could be on the transfer market.
Other options include Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas, Javier Pastore of Palermo, Santos trequartista Ganso and Napoli's Marek Hamsik.
The Corriere dello Sport even suggested Daniele De Rossi as a possible alternative considering his contract with Roma expires in June 2012.
