Milan continue to pursue Fiorentina's Riccardo Montolivo, but an alternative is Inter and Italy midfielder Thiago Motta.
The Rossoneri have confirmed they are looking for a reinforcement in that area of the pitch and Montolivo is the primary candidate.
His contract expires in June 2012 and he has repeatedly turned down a renewal, so the Viola are trying to find him a new club rather than lose the former captain on a free transfer.
It's believed Milan have offered cash plus co-ownership of Alberto Paloschi and Urby Emanuelson, but Fiorentina want only €12m cash.
However, if Milan do find difficulties reaching Montolivo, then today's newspapers in Italy suggest there is a valid alternative.
Tuttosport suggests Thiago Motta could cross the San Siro divide from rivals Inter.
He was put on the market some time ago, as it's reported he has unresolved issues with Coach Gian Piero Gasperini from their time together at Genoa.
Thiago Motta had already been linked to Milan before he joined Inter two years ago. The Brazilian has an Italian passport and plays his international football for the Azzurri.
