Serie A Week 20 - 17/1/10 (14.00 UK)
Fiorentina 1-2 Bologna
Gimenez 28 (B), Di Vaio 44 (B), Mutu 51 (F)
Stadio Franchi

Bologna stunned Fiorentina with a 2-1 win at the Stadio Franchi thanks to Marco Di Vaio.

The Viola expected a third consecutive victory, even if Cristiano Zanetti, Stevan Jovetic and the suspended Marco Donadel were absent. Bologna were struggling a point above the relegation zone after three defeats on the trot, although Massimo Mutarelli and Stephen Appiah were the only injury concerns.

Midweek Fiorentina scraped past Chievo 3-2 to reach the Coppa Italia quarter-final thanks to an Adrian Mutu brace. As Dario Dainelli was sold to Genoa this week, Riccardo Montolivo inherited the captain's armband.

Mario Alberto Santana's screamer was off target, while Marco Marchionni and new captain Montolivo also drilled wide.

However, Bologna broke the deadlock with practically their first shot on goal. Henry Gimenez was a surprise starter for the Rossoblu and he scored his first ever Serie A goal with a fantastic scissor-kick volley from nine yards.

The referee awarded a penalty for Bologna when Gamberini went in for a sliding tackle on Marco Di Vaio, but changed his mind after advice from the linesman. Replays do suggest Gamberini got the ball.

Casarini's long ball over the top found Di Vaio for a shot off target, but Alberto Gilardino had a decent penalty shout ignored for Daniele Portanova's shirt-tug.

Gila had nobody to blame but himself on the stroke of half-time, as a wayward Juan Manuel Vargas shot turned into an assist for the unmarked striker, who incredibly ballooned over from six yards!

Instead, Bologna doubled their lead moments later. Mingazzini's smart ball over the top sent Di Vaio clear and he cleverly chipped the on-rushing Sebastien Frey.

Fiorentina did get back into the game six minutes after the restart, as a Vargas cross from the left found Mutu's diving header from six yards, anticipating Lanna.

The visitors weren't frightened, though, as Di Vaio flashed a shot across Frey's boughs.

From this point on Fiorentina poured forward at the Stadio Franchi, as Emiliano Viviano needed saves on Vargas, Mutu and Gilardino.

Vargas was by far the best player for the Viola and skimmed the target as well as provided an assist for Gilardino that was closed down by Lanna.

Once again Vargas' angled drive was parried into the path of Gilardino, but Lanna got there in time.

In stoppages Viviano had his palms stung by a Montolivo half-volley from 20 metres.
