Marco Rossi's strike proved enough to down the Flying Donkeys and get Genoa back on track.
These sides showed a marked lack of consistency this season, so it was a difficult tie to predict. Genoa had been unable to string together two consecutive wins since the opening month, but had lost at home only once. Chievo had just one victory in their last six. Domenico Criscito sat out a ban for the Grifone.
Robert Acquafresca thought he had given Genoa the lead after nine minutes when he rushed into the box and chipped the 'keeper, but Mandelli rushed back for a crucial goalline clearance.
Luca Rigoni released Luciano for a counter, but Marco Amelia rushed off his line to close down the Brazilian. Chievo repeated the trick with a similar move and again Amelia was forced to parry with his legs from Sergio Pellissier.
Giandomenico Mesto drilled wide after a Rodrigo Palacio cross was not dealt with effectively. Palacio was booked for simulation after his dive had sparked a scuffle with furious Chievo players on the stroke of half-time. Bogdani did lay a hand on his back, but probably not enough to send him over.
Stefano Sorrentino smothered a Dario Dainelli header and Genoa did take the lead after 64 minutes.
Marco Rossi got the goal, as he waltzed down the right channel and placed an angled drive across the face of goal to the far bottom corner.
Andrea Mantovani nodded wide at the back post for Chievo, but Genoa had two great opportunities to double their advantage.
Omar Milanetto unleashed a blockbuster from over 25 metres that cracked against the crossbar.
Ariatti flashed just over the bar a few minutes after stepping on to the field.
