Lippi wants players vaccinated
Friday 25 September, 2009

Italy Coach Marcello Lippi would like every Italian football team to consider vaccinating their players against Influenza A.

He is concerned ahead of next summer's World Cup finals and is looking for a way to minimise the risk of it affecting his plans.

“We are evaluating the hypothesis of vaccinating the players of all our football teams against Influenza A. In fact, it's the strength of this flu's contagiousness that worries us,” Lippi said at the Festival of Health currently underway in his hometown, Viareggio.

“We have spoken with Professor Castellacci, the man responsible for this [treatment] on our medical staff and we have evaluated not so much the danger of the flu itself, but the strength of its contagiousness.

“Maybe we'll take precautions with regard to all our footballers,” Lippi concluded.

Subtypes of Influenza A include bird and swine flu, the latter being the latest to grab the world's attention.

Last month Landon Donovan, the USA international midfielder, revealed he had tested positive for swine flu.

It took him nearly a month to recover.
