Claudio Ranieri explains why being sacked by Leicester City “was like an accident” and admits Paris Saint-Germain could “monopolise” Ligue 1.

Ranieri sensationally led Leicester to the Premier League title last year, before being sacked just nine months later due to a poor run of results, while his new team are facing competition from the likes of Neymar and Dani Alves this season.

On This Day: Campioni Del Mondo!

Words: Luca LaPorta

On this day in 2006, Italy beat France 5-3 on penalties in Berlin, winning their fourth World Cup.

After beating hosts Germany in a nail-biting semi-final, the Azzurri had a tough task in knocking off Zinedine Zidane’s powerful French side.

The match started in probably the worst way possible for Marcello Lippi’s men. The referee awarded France an extremely controversial penalty kick in the seventh minute of the match, in which Zidane calmly put past his former Juventus teammate Gianluigi Buffon.

On This Day: Italy win second World Cup

On this day in 1938, Italy won their second World Cup with a 4-2 victory over Hungary in Paris.

The Azzurri had lifted the trophy on home soil four years previously, but were unpopular holders when they arrived in France.

The repressive regime of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini sparked anger from French fans toward the side which they saw as representing il Duce.

Their cause was not helped by the instruction to give a Roman salute before each match, with protests following the Italians around throughout the tournament.

However, with 53 minutes played Andrea Favilli surged down the right before swinging in a cross which Giuseppe Panico met with a thumping header.

Deschamps: 'Juve built for Champions'

Didier Deschamps notes Juventus “were built to win the Champions League,” but semi-finalists Monaco lack experience, even with “incredible” Kylian Mbappé.

The first leg is at the Stade Louis II on May 3 and the decider in Turin on May 9.

“You need to be a strong side to reach the semi-final of the Champions League, although Monaco do not have the quality of Juve, Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid,” France Coach Deschamps told Sky Sport Italia.
