Suso: Why Milan didn’t compete…

Suso believes Milan’s failure to beat “teams from the lower half” cost them the chance of competing for the Serie A title in recent seasons.

Speaking to Milan TV ahead of the Rossoneri’s trip to Sampdoria on Sunday, Suso also expressed his excitement at returning to Marassi, where he broke through during a loan spell at Genoa.

“[Marassi] is a stadium I like a lot because the fans are very close to the pitch, and the fans are very loud,”  mused the attacking midfielder.

Ferrero ‘dreams’ of buying Roma

Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero admits “I dream of buying Roma one day” and accuses Giallorossi rival James Pallotta of talking too much.

Ferrero has owned Samp since 2014 but was born in Rome, and the movie mogul made no secret of his desire to oust ‘Parlotta’ at the Olimpico.

“I’m Roma and ‘romanista’, I dream of buying Roma one day,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

‘China vetoed Schick to Inter’

Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero claims China stopped Patrik Schick from joining Inter as he warns against “handing things over to foreigners”.

Schick had been heavily linked with Inter over the summer but eventually moved to Roma for a club-record €42m, and Ferrero suggested he was happier that the striker chose the Giallorossi.

“He didn’t want to stay, otherwise I’d have kept him for another year,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Serie A attendances up

Week 5 saw an average of 23,000 fans at Serie A fixtures, as attendances continue to rise.

September sees the first midweek Serie A round of the season, and in the past two years the average attendance hadn’t cracked 20,000.

However, last night there were an average of 23,000 fans, a figure helped by the 45,343 who attended Milan-Spal and the 35,652 at Juventus-Fiorentina.

In addition, 28,000 fans attended the Stadio Olimpico to see Napoli beat hosts Lazio 3-1.

And then there were two

Napoli and Juventus continue to push each other, Inter fail to maintain their perfect start and Roma ease to victory, as Nick Valerio rounds up Week 5.

Napoli’s Scudetto credentials were put to the test when they travelled to the Stadio Olimpico. Having demolished Milan last weekend, all eyes were on the Capital and what began as a captivating encounter turned in to a procession, as the Partenopei emerged 4-1 victors.

In a game of two halves, the spectacle was marred by defensive injuries to the integral pair of goalscorer Stefan de Vrij and Bastos. There were concerns about the lack of strength in depth at Lazio, especially after selling Wesley Hoedt, and those fears proved justified.

Verona neutralise Sampdoria

Verona stopped the slide with a point and a clean sheet, as they successfully neutralised the Sampdoria attack thanks to two Antonio Caracciolo goal-line clearances.

The Blucerchiati thought they’d done enough to get the victory at the Bentegodi, but didn’t count on the heroics of Caracciolo.

The defender got back to deny both Gaston Ramirez’s header and a last-gasp Duvan Zapata effort.

This 0-0 result is a breath of fresh air for Hellas, who had conceded eight in the previous two rounds.
