Borini bouncing back

While Milan splashed out on star names this summer, Fabio Borini has been the surprise standout performer, writes Richard Hall.

Whilst the Rossoneri were spending in abundance this summer, Fabio Borini arrived with few fans and arguably fewer hopes. His loan move from Sunderland surprised many and would have seen more questions asked, had the likes of Andre Silva and Leonardo Bonucci not been catching the eye of the expectant fan base.

His new club promised much, but as yet have not delivered on expectations, as their players try desperately to gel as a cohesive unit. Despite all the odds however, Borini has been one component that has impressed in his time so far.

Parma 'will rise again' under new owner

Serie B side Parma have a new Chinese President, Jiang Lizhang, who pledged the club will “rise again like a giant to take its rightful place.”

The Ducali went bankrupt in 2015 and a new club began from its ashes in Serie D, but has already worked its way up to Serie B and is pushing for promotion.

That was achieved thanks to Nuovo Inizio, a conglomerate of local businessmen who retain 30 per cent of the club.

Serie B: Palermo take top spot

Palermo conquered Cremonese to go top, Venezia and Parma marched on and Cesena were pegged back by 10-man Salernitana in a six-goal thriller.

It was an extremely tense showdown in Cremona, as the Sicilians fought back from a goal down to win thanks also to their goalkeeper Alberto Pomini’s fingertip save in stoppages.

It was a spectacular match in Cesena, as despite going down to 10 men, Salernitana recovered a two-goal deficit to snatch a point.

Palermo are now top of the table, one point ahead of Frosinone and Venezia.

The Crociati have now managed to climb up to Serie B, and the veteran centre-back made his 311th league appearance against Frosinone on Sunday, surpassing the record Ermes Polli set in the 50s and 60s.

“I arrived on tiptoe in 2008,” Lucarelli wrote on his Facebook page.
