“I am happy with the result because we came up against an elite team like Milan,” Zeman told Sky Sport Italia.

“We tried to play our game and in part we managed it. I am just sorry that we didn’t make the most of some dangerous counter-attacks.

“We have some limitations, but today the team did fight hard and picked up a point against Milan. We did better in terms of performance and style of football. You can’t learn these things in a day.

“As long as it is mathematically possible, we need to keep believing in our chances of safety. People don’t expect much from us, but we want to try. The stadium was full today and I hope the fans had fun.”

Zeman surprisingly started 18-year-old Mamadou Coulibaly, who arrived in Italy on a refugee boat in December 2015 and was homeless for a while before he was spotted playing football with friends near his foster home.

“We can work with him, as he has never been in a football academy, so I can mould him to my style of football.”
