The Giallorossi host Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico this weekend and the stage is set for a farewell to the 40-year-old one-club-man.

“Has he actually said he’s retiring? Everyone talked about this except him,” former Roma Coach Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia.

Fans and local media are urging Luciano Spalletti to start the captain, but Roma need to beat Genoa in order to be sure of second place and automatic Champions League qualification.

“We have to see how the game goes, but I don’t think Spalletti will put him in from the start. Roma comes first, then Francesco.”

With Spalletti seemingly on his way to Inter, the favourite to take over at Roma next season is former Giallorossi midfielder Eusebio Di Francesco, who is currently at Sassuolo.

“If a Coach already knows Roma and Rome, then it will be an advantage, as he’ll know how to operate.”
