Inter failed to qualify for European football next season after a seventh-place, Serie A finish in 2016-17, but Zanetti believes there are plenty of positives for the Nerazzurri to draw from the disappointment.

“I have to say that I’m very happy for the career I had at a club like Inter, who mean so much to me,” the Vice-President and legendary defender said at a promotional event in Naples, reports FCInter1908.it.

“I loved these colours and I still do. Being able to represent Inter as a Vice-President is a great honour for me.

“Memories? I’ve had so many unforgettable moments, but if I have to say one then it’s that night in Madrid [the 2010 Champions League Final] for what the Champions League represented for us and the fans.

“It was an unforgettable night, but the moments you forget are the ones that make you even stronger. To know how to win, you must first know how to lose.

“Totti? It happened to me three years ago, it was a great emotion. I think that in his new role, he’ll help Italian football and more.

“Becoming a Coach? No. When I stopped playing, I started studying right away to be the best Vice-President I could be.

“The club care for us so much and being able to represent Inter anywhere in the world is a great source of pride.

“Palacio? I know Rodrigo well, I must thank him and Carrizo for how they honoured our shirt. They’ve always behaved in an exemplary way.

Juventus, Roma and Napoli? They’ve all played with great consistency, and the table is fair.

“The way Napoli played, with such a clever Coach, was liked by everyone. They play a great team game.”
