Silvio Berlusconi says that while “I suffered painfully” in selling Milan, “I am and always will be their No 1 fan.”

Berlusconi ended 30 years of owning Milan towards the end of last season, when he sold the club to a Chinese consortium, and the former Italian Prime Minister is desperate for his successors to bring the Rossoneri back to the forefront of European football.

“It touched my heart, I suffered painfully for what I was forced to do,” he told Telelombardia.

“Still, we have 30 years of glory behind us and I think these years will always be remembered by all Milan fans. I became the President of the No 1 club, who have won more than any other in history.

“On the new owners, logically I don’t allow myself to judge them, but I hope they act in the club’s best interests, to strengthen Milan with the view of a double commitment to Italy and Europe, which I say we must honour.

“I say this because although I no longer have anything to do with the club and the team, I am and always will be Milan’s No 1 fan.

“I’ll continue to rejoice and suffer, like I’ve have always done, like when my father took me to the stadium as a child and taught me that after each victory, I had to prepare for a new challenge, and after each defeat, we should bounce back and fight to win again.”
