Inter legend Ronaldo defends Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma – “there’s too much emotion”.

The 18-year-old goalkeeper rejected a new contract with the Rossoneri – though he’s thought to be reconsidering – leading to abuse on social media and protests at Italy Under-21 games.

“There’s too much feeling, too much emotion, even from Milanisti,” Ronaldo, who also played for Milan, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Heart is important, but it wasn’t the players who decided that football would become such a huge injury where everyone takes money.

“It’s the footballers perhaps least of all, as they’re the most vulnerable. If they don’t get on a train they risk stagnating and if they take it, it’s easy to be seen as traitors.

“I’m not on Donnarumma’s side, I’m just saying you have to be careful about judging. He has a very clear right to choose, he has to be able to choose where he’s most valued and motivated.

“That could also mean Milan, obviously, but everyone has their own challenges and you have to respect that.

“I changed teams a lot of times, it’s true, they were often hard choices but they were always important challenges.

“Could he go to Real Madrid? The transfer market doesn’t fall under my remit. I read that Donnarumma is liked, but that’s normal.

“Great players are always welcome at Real, they’re almost obliged to follow them.”

Ronaldo is an ambassador for Los Merengues, who beat Juventus 4-1 in the Champions League final.

“First of all it was a beautiful final, with a much more competitive Juve than two years ago against Barcelona.

“In the second half though Real always had the ball, they were superior in everything. Everything.

“Juventus are rumoured to have argued at half-time? It’s an old story. Maybe these things don’t happen that often – though we’ll never know if it’s true or not – but do you know how many times I saw that at half-time, or the end of matches?

“I think with two Champions League finals in three years Juve have now sent a very important signal in Europe.

“In Italy they still seem to me like the strongest. They’ve sold well, reinvested and remained competitive.

“Today’s Juve work in a much more transparent way that in my day, and they’re reaping what they’re sowing. They deserve it.”
