“I was on vacation in America. I saw there was some interest from Milan, which can only be flattering, but my plan was to stay here and become a great goalkeeper at Genoa. Every year I get linked with different clubs.

“I am the goalkeeper of Genoa and I am happy to confirm that.”

Perin tried to calm some of the controversy around Milan shot-stopper Donnarumma and his contract demands.

“I think that first of all a professional football player is a business. We’ve got family, we have people by our side and need to ensure they are looked after. Every decision a player makes has to be respected.

“Personally, I think Donnarumma wanted to renew from the start. The way I care about Genoa is how he feels about Milan. I am ready to take on all the responsibility required to represent Genoa. We want to give the new players an idea of what Genoa means.

“I think last year, for various reasons, Genoa hit rock bottom. We really want to make up for it and prove ourselves, both individually and as a collective. We will all try together to have a great campaign.

“Despite how everything went, we’re happy to have emerged from that season relatively unscathed. Considering how things were going, that was an achievement.

“Donnarumma has a bright career ahead of him, but I am convinced that after my injuries, I can get back to having my say in Serie A.”

Genoa are expected to bring back Donnarumma’s Milan teammate Andrea Bertolacci, who never quite settled at San Siro.

“I send him a message every day! He’s the kind of player we could really do with, as he has great character and immense class. I’m pressing him…”
