Nesta: ‘Totti will be a director’

Alessandro Nesta admits Miami FC approached Roma legend Francesco Totti but “he has a future as a director”.

The 40-year-old played his final match for the Giallorossi against Genoa in May, but hinted that he could continue as a player elsewhere.

There is an offer on the table to become a director with his boyhood club, and Nesta believes he’ll take it up.

“Totti’s farewell? I think it was emotional for everyone, no matter who you support,” the former Lazio captain told Corriere della Sera.

“Not every great champion gets to have a day like that. In Rome they’re critical, demanding but they’re great.

“Could Totti come to Miami? We talked, but he has a future as a director.

“He said he was afraid? The day the League season begins and you’re not there, it’s tough. And if you don’t have anything interesting to do it’s tiring: you miss the pitch, the dressing room.

“You can spend time with your children and go shopping with your wife, but we’re used to different emotions. I know what Francesco meant.”

Nesta is also a hero at Milan, and he was asked about the situation with Gianluigi Donnarumma, who finally renewed his contract today.

“I don’t know who he had offers from, but it’s clear that if it’s Real Madrid it’ll make you think for a moment.

“Eventually everything went the right way, but I have a different perspective on it.

“When Milan return, they won’t have these problems anymore. A few years ago that was the highest level you could arrive at. They need to regain that prestige.”

Juventus have won the Scudetto for six years in a row, can anyone stop them this year?

“I think the next title is Juve’s to lose. Roma so far have only sold, so we’ll need to see who they buy. Napoli haven’t sold and they haven’t bought. [Maurizio] Sarri’s team will be the anti-Juve next season.

“The Milan clubs? There’s a wider gap to be bridged there, and it’ll take time to do so.

“It depends on how they invest, it’s only from that point of view that they’ll be able to compete with Juve over the next few years.”
