Peter Ruffai, the Nigeria goalkeeper in the 1994 World Cup, sent a message to “legend” Roberto Baggio about that dramatic late Italy goal.

The Azzurri were on the verge of elimination and down to 10 men at the 89th minute in that tournament when Il Divin Codino placed a snooker-shot into the near bottom corner.

Forcing extra time, Baggio then converted a penalty to send Italy through and they eventually reached the Final.

“I still remember that experience of the ’94 World Cup, but all the same you remain one of my favourite players,” said Ruffai in a video message on Sky Sport Italia.

“I always appreciated your discipline and character, both on and off the pitch.

“I hope to meet you one day, you never can tell, but you remain one of my legends. Keep it going and I wish you all the best.

“I am not angry you scored in the ’94 World Cup, I’ll tell you something, that was a beautiful goal you scored! Well done.”

Baggio was flattered to hear that 23 years later and replied: “Wow, I thank him. And I apologise for scoring past him in ’94.”
