Paolo Di Canio blasted Roma and Lazio for “this provincial mentality of thinking they’re Kings of the Capital. They’re fake winners.”

The former Lazio fan favourite spoke to Sky Sport Italia during a six-a-side tournament in London.

“The problem is that if you think you’re the Kings of the Capital, but always finish, sixth, fourth, fifth, seventh or eighth you can never win something important.

The former Lazio fan favourite spoke to Sky Sport Italia during a six-a-side tournament in London.

“The problem is that if you think you’re the Kings of the Capital, but always finish, sixth, fourth, fifth, seventh or eighth you can never win something important.

“This is a provincial mentality. It’s important in the Capital, but if you focus only on that, on the disappointment of the other side, you’ll always be a fake winner.

“This has been happening to Lazio as well as Roma for many years and the fans know it too.”

Giallorossi supporters have been critical of the transfer strategy so far after Mohamed Salah, Antonio Rudiger and Leandro Paredes were sold.

“I knew top stars would not arrive, because that’s not how Monchi works, as he’ll find young talents who are potential champions in future.

“However, this being Roma, they always demand more. Roma came second last season. It’s tough for fans to think there’s a new Coach, a revolutionised team and signing two or three big players to build long-term. Fans in Rome don’t think like that.”
