The 31-year-old wore the Biancocelesti jersey from 2012 to 2015, moving on to Flamengo as a free agent.
This afternoon a Press conference was held in which he confirmed an anti-doping exam showed up irregularities.
Upon further inspection, medics found he was suffering from testicular cancer.
Ederson will undergo surgery and more will be known following a biopsy.

The discovery of testicular cancer via an irregular anti-doping test result was also experienced by Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi.
“It’s hard to find the words, as this really hit me,” said Ederson.
“I am sad, but also feeling very calm for the days ahead. It’s going to be another battle and I’m thinking positive. I’m thankful for what happened, because God has helped me to discover this problem early.
“I want everyone to keep a positive and happy mood, as that will help me.”
