Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport for its Friday edition, Pioli appeared to confirm Inter’s “great signing” of Vecino, as well as reacting to fears that a difficult campaign awaited Fiorentina and backing Federico Chiesa to star again.

“I’d like Fiorentina to prove on August 20, against Icardi and his teammates, that they’ll play an important role next season,” asserted the Coach after it emerged the Viola would begin the new season against his former club.

“Inter’s lack of transfer activity? They already had a strong team. Vecino, for example, is a great signing. He’s worth the same as Matuidi and he’s a complete midfielder.

“We’re starting again after an important cycle, and we have the ambition to develop another.

“We want to rekindle the city’s enthusiasm, but in order to do this, we need results.

“It’s clear that I have a team to finish building, but I’m convinced that the right players will join soon.

“Chiesa? It’s a pleasure to work with him. He knows he had a great season last time out and that next season will be all the more difficult.

“Still, he has the necessary humility and desire to keep growing. The important thing is not to regard him as our saviour.”
