Verona defeat Sampdoria

Hellas Verona beat Sampdoria in an all-Serie A friendly today thanks to a late Mattia Zaccagni strike.

The season formally begins on the weekend of August 20 and Verona are back in the top flight after one year in the wilderness.

These two will meet in the Serie A campaign, but this evening went head-to-head in Trento.

Gianluca Caprari and Dennis Praet had early chances, while Alessio Cerci drilled just wide, but Praet was unlucky to see his angled drive come off the upright.

Verona seemed to keep their shape more in the second half and, after Andrea Tozzo’s save on Enrico Bearzotti, Zaccagni pounced on a Lorenco Simic error to smash in the winning goal.
