Ciro Immobile’s brace had put them 2-0 up at the Stadio Olimpico, then Paulo Dybala scored with a free kick and penalty to get Juve on level terms, but deep into stoppages 21-year-old Alessandro Murgia secured the winner.

“Unfortunately, these games are never over until they’re over, but in my view justice was done, as over the 95 minutes Lazio deserved this cup and need to be rewarded for their efforts,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“The team is in good shape physically, we’ve worked since July 4 because we wanted revenge for the Coppa Italia Final defeat. We conceded on two dead ball situations, but I tip my hat to these lads, as they gave their all and fully deserved it.”

Lazio achieved this without the injured Felipe Anderson, while Keita Balde Diao was left out amid transfer speculation linking him to Juventus.

“Too much has already been said about Keita. He didn’t look calm or focused enough to play tonight, while Felipe Anderson was injured, so I made do with the players at my disposal.

“We beat Juventus, who compared to us are challenging for other targets, but we proved that with abnegation and hard work, we can level the playing field. It’s only right that these lads now enjoy the trophy with their fans.

“I told the lads today that we had to play as a team, otherwise we would never beat Juventus. I am really proud and honoured to work with them.”

The squad nonetheless looks very thin indeed and Lazio surely require reinforcements, especially with the Europa League commitments.

“The club works 24 hours a day. We have a lot of ideas, maybe not the resources of some other clubs, but we’ve got ideas and will do what’s best for Lazio. Don’t forget there were murmurs when Luis Alberto was signed and he showed tonight what kind of player he is.”
