Marco Borriello explained why he is leaving Cagliari for Spal, but insists he never argued with Coach Massimo Rastelli.

The 35-year-old centre-forward had one of his most prolific campaigns last term, scoring 16 Serie A goals and four in the Coppa Italia.

It’s widely reported he will join newly-promoted Spal and make the trip along with Cagliari defender Bartosz Salamon.

“Good morning friends and in particular the Cagliari fans, I want to clarify what has been written and said regarding my absence from the team and change of club!” wrote Borriello on his Instagram page.

“First of all, I want to make it clear that I did not argue with Massimo Rastelli, the club or my teammates!!! So everything you read and heard about that is FALSE!!!

“Last year when I came to Cagliari, I did it with great determination, motivation and enthusiasm, which is why I had a fantastic season thanks also to the help of my teammates, scoring 20 goals and finishing 11th in Serie A…

“For many reasons this year, after several training sessions and games, I no longer felt that fire in the belly. I think that for a 35-year-old player, motivation has to be the basis for everything, you have to go on to the pitch with the real belief in what you’re doing…

“I consider myself a passionate person who is constantly seeking new challenges and if those elements are missing then it becomes a problem for ME…

“Seeing as I didn’t want to become a problem for Cagliari, for my teammates, the Coach or the fans… I decided a week ago, after the (Coppa Italia) game with Palermo, to manifest my desire to change to the director of sport and President.

“I didn’t want to ruin all the good work I’d done with the Cagliari jersey and for those fantastic fans who really made me feel like an idol, welcoming me as if I was home!!!

“I want to salute the city of Cagliari and all the fans for what they gave me… I will always carry you in my heart.

“Now my journey continues elsewhere, I still want to prove myself and give something important to Italian football!!!

“A hug, Marco.”
