Fresh from a 3-0 friendly defeat to Spain in Toledo on Friday evening, the Azzurrini host Slovenia on Monday at 20.15 UK time (19.15 GMT).

“It was a game that will help us to grow and allowed us to realise what stage the new guys were at,” said Di Biagio in his Press conference.

“We certainly should’ve played better, but the result was too harsh considering the number of chances we created and shots on goal, while the possession statistics were fairly similar. It should also be underlined that the Spanish goalkeeper was Man of the Match.

“It’s true that our style of football has to improve, because we did struggle in that sense, but I believe we are on the right track and the lads are absorbing what we ask of them.

“We have to work on controlling the ball and realising that if we play a certain type of football at international level, we won’t get far.

“Slovenia will be a very different match compared to Spain, as they are more aggressive and less technical. At the same time, we’ll also be allowed fewer spaces to attack in and consequently we must speed up the moves.”

Verona defender Gian Filippo Felicioli has returned to his club early with a muscular problem.
