“Losing 3-0 is not good for Italy, but it’s a game that we can learn from, especially the younger players,” Barzagli told Rai Sport of their defeat to Spain.

“Italy not going to the World Cup would be devastating, but we mustn’t even think about that. We have to metabolise this defeat and continue along our path, knowing full well that the work before that match was good.”

With Leonardo Bonucci suspended and Giorgio Chiellini injured tonight, does Barzagli feel lonely without the other members of the BBC defence?

“Over the last few years I’ve seen them more than my wife and kids, so a little space is healthy!

“Criticism of Buffon makes me laugh, especially as a week ago he was voted the best goalkeeper in the Champions League. It’s madness to criticise him, as I frankly haven’t seen all these mistakes that others apparently did.

“It takes balance, to realise how good Gigi is and not just dump all the responsibility on him.”
