Edin Dzeko insists “it was more important to win the game than play good football” as Roma beat Qarabag 2-1.

Kostas Manolas and the Bosnian centre-forward opened the scoring early, but Pedro Henrique left the game open to the final whistle in Baku.

“It was important to win the game, probably more important than playing good football,” the striker told Mediaset Premium.

“We should’ve finished it off in the first half, but after their goal it all became more difficult. We suffered together as a group and that’s how it should be at this level.

“We started so strong and scored two goals in 15 minutes, so you can’t ask for more than that. Then we conceded and that gave Qarabag confidence, they started pressing us and we were unable to play our football.

“It was not easy to win here, but the result was the important thing. A great team knows how to suffer and grind out a result, that is in itself a quality.

“Even if everyone thought this was going to be easy, we didn’t. Perhaps we thought too much about Milan and Sunday’s game, but we did it.”
