Reports in Peru suggest their national team could be excluded from the 2018 World Cup, in which case Italy would potentially be given their spot.
Peruvian newspaper Libero notes there is a proposed law put forward by Paloma Noceda which would put their football federation under the control of the State – which is not allowed under FIFA rules.
Noceda is President of the Commission for Instruction, Youth and Sport, who put forth this proposed law to make the Federation part of the Peruvian Institute for Sport.
It’s reported that FIFA are worried about this development and asked Peru for further information.
If the law is passed and FIFA aren’t happy with the situation, it is possible Peru could be banned from international competition and with that the World Cup next summer.
Italy could end up being the beneficiaries, having lost the play-offs 1-0 on aggregate to Sweden, but it would depend on many different factors and is still to be considered improbable.
