Police in Liverpool confirm Atalanta fans were not involved in the mass brawl that broke out ahead of tonight’s game against Everton.
The Europa League tie kicks off at 20.05 GMT at Goodison Park and over 3,500 fans are believed to have made the trip from Bergamo.
Footage of the violent street brawl in Concert Square went viral online and there were reports Atalanta supporters were involved.
However, police confirmed to the Liverpool Echo that the trouble started when German nationals were refused entry to a bar in the Ropewalks area.
“A large group of people were involved in this incident of disorder last night, and we are working to establish exactly why it happened,” said a spokesperson for Merseyside police.
“We will take strong action against anyone who risks the good reputation our city centre has, and bring people responsible for incidents such as this to justice.”
At least 10 people have been arrested, including eight German nationals, following the altercation with bouncers.
