Gian Piero Gasperini confessed “it was difficult to imagine a result like that” after Atalanta destroyed Everton 5-1 at Goodison Park.

They only needed a point here to be sure of entry into the top 32 sides in the Europa League, but were absolutely dominant over the Premier League side.

“It was difficult to imagine a result like that!” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The start wasn’t good, we got it back on track towards half-time and made a mistake in trying to control the game too much. We picked up the tempo, were more aggressive and that made the difference.

“The result was beyond all expectations, but qualification is the important thing. I don’t know if finishing top or second in the group is better, because the draw can be strange.

“We want to thank the fans who followed us all over Europe and we’re glad we can have more journeys with them from February onwards.”

Bryan Cristante was the star of the show with a brace of headers, though substitute Andreas Cornelius also got two late on.

“Cristante is in extraordinary shape, he has some ups and downs, but once he gets into shape, he keeps it long-term. He’s certainly improved in front of goal, too. He has physical strength and also pushes forward in midfield.”

After a night like this in Liverpool, will anyone in the Atalanta squad be able to sleep?

“Fortunately, we’re not playing again until Monday. We won’t arrive back in Bergamo until tomorrow morning, so I doubt anyone will sleep!”
