Luciano Spalletti says he is “extremely convinced” that Mauro Icardi could stay at Inter for life, despite speculation linking the striker with Real Madrid.

Marca reported earlier in the week that Madrid were looking at Icardi as a replacement for Karim Benzema, with former Italy international Daniele Massaro adding to the clamour, but Spalletti insists the No 9 is “totally in love” with the Nerazzurri.

“Who doesn’t want Icardi? If you ask me, everyone wants him,” he said at a Press conference for Saturday’s trip to Cagliari in Serie A.

“I see him totally in love with Inter. When I talk to him, I can sense it: the city, teammates, club, fans… he’s attached to them all in a very strong way. I’m extremely convinced that he could stay at Inter forever.”

Inter remain unbeaten after 13 games, with the side just two points behind Napoli in second place, so what has been the secret behind their invincible form?

“Our results depend on the mentality that we’re applying to get results,” he explained.

“I’m happy with the team, but we still have room for growth. We’re unbeaten but we have to ask, why haven’t we always won?

“Gap between us and the big teams? For now, there isn’t one anymore, but we have to keep doing what’s been done already.

“Every time we play, we have to start afresh and show our quality on the pitch. We must play without respite, that’s become our motto.

“Cagliari? They know how to reach their ultimate objective and they’re rediscovering themselves.

“Lopez has made a huge contribution, given he knows the club, and he’s a young Coach who knows how to do his job well.

“Squad players? You only know the price of some players, but no-one talks about their value.

"The values of these players will be seen before the end of the season. Vecino seemed expensive, Dalbert too… their values won’t get lost.”
