Although the Giallorossi are flying high in Serie A, they fell to a 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday.

“I think Atleti wanted the win at all costs and, especially in the last 25 minutes, we got stretched out,” explained the Coach in his Press conference.

“We were less compact, less of a team and less determined in our pressing, which is what made the difference in the first half. It’s not just about intensity, but also determination and desire. That’s the negative part of the game in Madrid.

“We improved in some respects, but I do not settle. I know we can and must do better. I feel great enthusiasm around the squad and less negativity, which is not only down to the results, but also the right attitude. We can do better and remember this is a city that can build you up very quickly, so we must remain aware of that and stay humble.”

Di Francesco has rotated his squad more than most this season and finally has Patrik Schick available for the trip to Genoa.

“Schick is in the squad, as he trained for the last two days with the rest of the team with consistency and without feeling any pain. I think that’ll be the most important aspect. I can’t tell you how many minutes he can play, but he certainly won’t start.

“Schick is a player who could be useful for us down the right. I have Stephan El Shaarawy and Diego Perotti, who can play on either flank, but we’re trying to improve down that right side.

“Kevin Strootman is the player who ran more than anyone during the derby. It’s normal people are accustomed to seeing him with more goals and assists than he has this season, but he’ll be back, I hope as soon as possible. Lorenzo Pellegrini and Strootman are giving the team a real boost in terms of quality and intensity.

“Edin Dzeko wasn’t that sharp against Atletico, but I hope he’ll find the net tomorrow. It weighs on a striker when he doesn’t score for a while, but the important thing is the team and I am perfectly relaxed.”

Roma are on the verge of finally receiving the go-ahead for their new Stadio della Roma project, which could open for the 2020-21 campaign.

“I think it’s all going the right way and we’re very happy. Who wouldn’t want their own stadium? I am convinced it’ll be a huge boost and a success for both Roma and its fans.”
