Fiorentina director Giancarlo Antognini hails Federico Chiesa’s renewal at the club as ‘an important step.’

The 20-year-old recently put pen-to-paper on a new contract that will see him remain in Florence until 2022.

Ahead of this evening’s Serie A match at Lazio, the official added that the target now for the Viola is to construct a competitive squad.

“Chiesa’s renewal is an important step for him and for Fiorentina,” Antognini said.

“Our prerogative is to look to have a good season in order to then build a competitive team.”

Fiorentina, in their first season under Coach Stefano Pioli, are currently 11th in the table after losing six of their opening 13 matches of the campaign.
