The former Inter and Samp goalkeeper has also been the tactician at FC National, Steaua Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade, Gaziantepspor, Dinamo Bucharest, Al-Nasr and Al-Shaab.

Crotone needed a new Coach after Nicola suddenly resigned, seemingly in protest at President Gianni Vrenna entering the locker room at half-time in their 3-0 home defeat to Udinese.

Options for the job had included Gianni De Biasi and Alessandro Nesta.
