The incident occurred on the stroke of half-time with the score at 0-0 (though Toro eventually won 3-1).

“It’s incredible, that was a clear penalty,” Aquile midfielder Luis Alberto told Mediaset Premium at the break.

“You can’t play football like this and in too many games this has happened to us. Maybe people don’t like Lazio being in the top four. Now we want to win even more! We’re coming out for the second half and will definitely win now.”

Immobile’s cross was charged down from point-blank range by Iago Falque’s hand, with his arm very high and detached from the torso, so it was a very strong penalty shout.

The move continued and Immobile’s volley hit the post, then once play had been halted, he turned to call for VAR intervention.

During his protest, Immobile went face-to-face with Torino defender Nicolas Burdisso and jerked his head towards him. While not quite a headbutt, it was certainly not a wise gesture to make in the circumstances and with VAR technology used in Serie A this season.

Referee Piero Giacomelli went to view the VAR footage and opted for a straight red card for Immobile, but did not give the penalty.

It’s not even clear if he saw the clip again on the side of the pitch.
