A second half Sassuolo fightback and Jasmin Kurtic’s red card couldn’t stop Atalanta advancing to the quarter finals of the Coppa Italia.
The Orobici took a 2-0 first half lead before being pegged back in the second half, but took a 2-1 win to set up a tie with Napoli.
Andreas Cornelius opened the scoring after 16 minutes, smashing the ball in at Gianluca Pegolo’s near post after being cleverly picked out by a ball over the top.
It was 2-0 just after the half hour mark.
A deep corner found Rafael Toloi at the back post, and he rose highest to power a header into the bottom corner.
The Neroverdi got back into it in the second half, with Toloi diverting past his own goalkeeper on Marcello Gazzola’s cross.
Jasmin Kurtic saw red late on, but Atalanta held on to set up a quarter-final tie with Napoli.
