Luciano Spalletti admits the Derby della Madonnina “cannot be considered just any other match” ahead of the Milan-Inter Coppa Italia quarter-final.

It kicks off on Wednesday at 19.45 GMT at San Siro, with the winners going on to face Lazio or Fiorentina in the semi-final.

“It is a very important game and there are no circumstances where the derby could be considered just any other match,” noted the tactician on Inter TV.

“It gives you a great deal, but takes it away too. We consider ourselves ready for this tie, as it paves the way towards the semi-final and we must give our best both as a team and individually.

“We need everyone to feel fundamental, as there is another game in three days and if we are forced to make changes, we want each player ready to give his all.”

Inter had been unbeaten in all competition until a couple of weeks ago, but have now lost two Serie A games on the bounce against Udinese and Sassuolo.

“We have done something below our capabilities and must raise the general standard. My theory of football is that whoever plays better will probably win. We therefore try to play better.

“I expect a signal from the team and the realisation one step is no longer enough, now we need two.”

It’s going to be a packed fixture list over the Christmas period, as after Milan, Inter will take on Lazio, Fiorentina and Roma in Serie A.

Matias Vecino returns from suspension, but Danilo D’Ambrosio and Joao Mario are out injured.

Inter squad for Milan: Berni, Handanovic, Padelli; Dalbert, Joao Cancelo, Lombardoni, Nagatomo, Ranocchia, Santon, Skriniar; Borja Valero, Brozovic, Gagliardini, Joao Mario, Vecino; Candreva, Eder, Icardi, Karamoh, Perisic, Pinamonti
